Meghan Markle's First Job Was in the Food Industry — Food News

I'd wager that 99.9 percent of the people reading this don't fall into the category of celebrity. That's probably why I — and many of you, I imagine — get so much enjoyment out of knowing when celebrities come from humble beginnings. There's still time to become a superstar! Right? Maybe? That's why I was so excited to learn that Meghan Markle, the soon-to-be Duchess, was 13 when she had her first job and it paid just $4 an hour.

Yes, that's right — Meghan Markle was a yogurt shop girl! She took out the trash and scooped up frozen delectables at LA-based Humphrey Yogart, which I commend for the excellent wordplay. She reveled in this fact about herself in a Tweet that dates back to 2014.

Markle's boss at the yogurt shop, Paula Sheftel, told the Sunday Mirror that Markle was well-liked at the shop. "She earned minimum wage and was very popular with customers. She had to prove she had an outgoing personality and would work well with staff," explained Sheftel.

The first question I had when I learned about Markle's first job was whether or not this was legal. But it turns out that in California it's legal as long as you're working weekends and $4 was the minimum wage in 1994, when she was working there. So yes, it turns out Markle's first job was totally legal and fine.

Knowing that Markle has come such a long way from the yogurt shop makes her success and marriage to Prince Harry that much more sweeter. While her path isn't common by any means, it's something this writer admires. Does this mean I too can work my way up to being the briefcase girl on Deal or No Deal, play a fierce lawyer on successful TV show, and then marry a prince? Probably not, but I can dream.

What was your first job? Did you also scoop ice cream or yogurt? Let us know in the comments!
