5 Quick Holiday Mocktails for Last-Minute Festivities — Recipes From The Kitchn

December 30, 2017

The holidays are all about partying — but whether you're honoring a recovering friend or just providing options for those who may be avoiding booze, it's great to have non-alcoholic drink ingredients on hand. Here are five new favorites, inspired by a friend who is relearning how to entertain after giving up alcohol.

Mocktails, but Not Really

I don't love the word "mocktail" because it implies giving something up. Instead of simply recreating traditional cocktails without the alcohol, which can often end up tasting flat, try serving things that don't taste like any drink people have probably had a lot of — that way, it feels like trying something new, instead of like drinking a watered-down version of something you know already.

These five drinks should feel familiar in all ways the holidays usually do. But just as each year brings something a little new to our memories, these five mocktails — made with everything from tea, cider, and coconut water — add a little something special to evenings with friends and families, when everyone can have something festive to sip on.

  • There's a not eggnog that's made with coconut water so basically we're calling it a health drink. Whip it up for those nights after skiing when everyone wants something creamy and cozy to sip on.
  • A mock mojito is probably the most crowd-friendly drink of the bunch and a great idea when you've got your pregnant friend, a parent who doesn't drink, and some teens who want to feel like they're part of the party on the guest list. It moves from the holidays into the rest of year like a pro.
  • For the quickest of mocktails, try a hot gingered cider. It's a simple as warming up apple cider and popping in a ginger tea bag. A two-ingredient drink at its finest.
  • There's also a spiced vanilla bean steamer, a drink so elegant even those who do drink will ask you to make them one. It starts with a turmeric-ginger tea bag, a splash of milk of your choice, and a heady vanilla bean syrup. We bet the kids will love it too.
  • Our pomegranate tonic is one mocktail on this list that might remind you of an actual cocktail. Fashioned after a gin & tonic, you'll get all the herb, tart, slight sweet flavors in this drink, thanks to pomegranate molasses and tonic water.
