These New Tearless Onions Won't Make You Cry — Food News

December 23, 2017

The major downside of chopping onions is that they make you cry. In the past, we've talked about the five basic tips to cut onions without crying. They have to do with actual culinary tips as opposed to old-wives tales. We've also talked about things that sound a bit more out of sorts, like holding a piece of bread in your mouth while chopping or soaking your onions before chopping. And you know what? They all work! But what if they didn't have to?

For the last three decades, the Sunions scientists have been working on an onion that doesn't make you tear up when you cut into it. What? That sounds out of this world, right? Wrong. They've been busy cross-breeding onions to weed out the strong stench to create an onion that decreases in pungency after time.

They're claimed to be crispy, sweet, and, best of all, already available in grocery stores. Okay, only some grocery stores. They are currently being grown in Idaho, Nevada, and Washington and although the company hasn't disclosed which stores they're available in, we're guessing they are probably located in those states for test marketing.

The company is adamant about only releasing the onions at peak taste and tenderness, so they might not be available year-round yet, but hopefully soon and in more locations!
