The Most Ridiculous Presents Featured in Top Holiday Gift Guides — Shopping

December 01, 2017

Tis the season for magazines and websites to release their gift guides. While these guides are usually extremely helpful — especially ours, with more than 325 gifts (although we're slightly biased) — there are always a few suggestions that leave us scratching our heads. "Who would ask for that? Who would buy that?" we sometimes ask ourselves.

This year is no exception, so we've rounded up five of the most ridiculous gift ideas we've seen so far.

From our own Kitchn A to Z gift guide! Let's just start this off saying that gift guides are hard. It's tough to suggest a present for your aunt who we've never met! So if we're going to poke fun at gift guides (we're doing it in a friendly way!), it's only fair that we also mock ourselves a little. Here goes: In our roundup of splurgy gifts, we suggest this $32 matchbox holder for hostesses. It's silly because matches come in books or boxes!

From Country Living's gift guide: The editors at Country Living think we know someone who needs a custom egg stamp to mark eggs with. Even if our best friend had her own backyard chicken coup (she does not!), this would still seem like an unnecessary gift.

From Goop's gift guide: Leave it to Goop to suggest a gadget that exists solely to cut chocolates — presumably Reese's Peanut Butter Cups — into quarters. The most ridiculous part? Pricing is only available upon request!

From Oprah's gift guide: Oprah may be able to spend $55 on a single chicken pot pie, but that seems a little excessive to us. Also, no one likes chicken pot pie enough to warrant it as a holiday gift. If you simply must wrap one up, make it yourself using our easy skillet chicken pot pie recipe.

From Food & Wine's gift guide: Although some of their picks can get a bit pricey, for the most part we generally agree with Food & Wine's aesthetic. However, it's a hard no on this way-too-expensive flatware set. Seriously, name one person's home this would look good in!
