Thank You To Our Readers! We're Supporting The Planet Together — 1% Makes a Huge Difference—For the Planet
At the heart of the holiday season, under all the lights and decorations and parties, is the spirit of giving: finding the perfect gift for a loved one, helping the less fortunate, giving back to your community. That spirit has been a part of Apartment Therapy from the beginning, and our biggest cause is, well, the biggest cause: the Earth.
Since 2007, since I first learned of Yvon Chouinard's founding of this initiative—10 years!—we've been proud to be a member business of 1% for the Planet, a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving. Members like us pledge to give 1% of their pretax revenue—not profits!—to environmental organizations. Individuals can join too, by pledging 1% of their annual salary or net worth.
You, our readers, are the reason we've been able to support some incredible organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Sustainable Harvest International, and more recently The Peconic Land Trust and the Hawthorne Valley Farm. All because of you we will be able to give over $150,000 this year to support land conservation, sustainable farming and a sleep away farm education program for school children.
I'm so proud of the history that we—the whole Apartment Therapy Media family and you, our readers—have built with this amazing initiative.
Founded by Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (Blue Ribbon Flies) in 2002, 1% for the Planet has given more than $175 million to environmental nonprofits. It's grown to include more than 1,200 member businesses, hundreds of individual members, and thousands of nonprofit partners in more than 60 countries.
Yvon calls that 1% an "earth tax," and though it might sound small, there have been leaner years when I've written that check with clenched teeth. But the planet just can't wait for our help, and every year it gets more urgent.
But we can all do more. Look for the 1% for the Planet logo to buy from businesses that share our commitment to sustainability. (Keap, Coyuchi, and Newly have great finds for the home.)
