The Hilarious Reason Everyone Is Fighting Over the Burger Emoji — Pop Culture

November 01, 2017

When it comes to the crazy world of social media, the most heated debates to ever break out have revolved around food. Like that time Twitter lost its mind over whether hot dogs are sandwiches, or when literally no one could decide if spoons or forks were best for eating macaroni and cheese. And then there was the epic ketchup debacle of 2017 (I mean seriously, who puts it in the fridge?!).

Needless to say, people really, really care about their food and they will drag you through the virtual mud if you disagree. So we shouldn't be surprised that many users have taken serious issue with Google's version of the cheeseburger emoji.

Here's what we're talking about.

That's right, one of the most classic food emojis bears a glaring discrepancy. In Apple and Unicode's original version, a cheese slice sits on top of the patty. Meanwhile, cheese sits underneath the hamburger in Google's rendition. To be honest, we're not sure why anyone on the design team thought this was a smart idea. After all, you want a slice of American or sharp cheddar to melt and fall onto your gloriously greasy burger, not the bun or — worse yet — all over your hands.

What's more, Google has also placed the lettuce on top of the patty alongside a tomato slice while Apple uses the greens below the burger, seemingly as a shield for the bun. And neither of the burger emojis contain bacon, which has been considered a blasphemous oversight by some. Of course, once the issue started trending on Twitter and more users started chiming in, our feeds were flooded with countless, wildly polarizing opinions.

In an attempt to temper the madness, Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, announced on Sunday that he would "drop everything else" and address the issue — that is, as long as everyone is able to come to an agreement.

Two days later, there's no final word on whether Google intends to "fix" its "incorrect" cheeseburger emoji, so the fiery arguments may rage on. But, if we're going by the poll conducted by Twitter itself, then that means we're getting cheese on top across the board. (A whopping 86 percent of the 350+ users who voted were in favor of cheese on top.) I'd call that a cheesy victory. Time to fire up the grill and celebrate with a greasy one.
