I Is for Ingredients — Shopping

November 29, 2017

Random items from a mainstream grocery store can actually be decent gifts. If you're looking for something even better, however, check out this list of fun ingredients. They're all more exciting than an off-the-shelf jar of peanut butter and not likely something people will think to buy for themselves.

  1. Everything Bagel Topping, $10 for eight ounces at King Arthur Flour: This seasoning mix includes poppy and sesame seeds, dried onion, garlic, and salt. It's great on bagels, of course, but also pasta, salads, chicken — basically everything.
  2. Vermont Creamery Cultured Butter Basket, $18 for two, 6-ounce baskets at Murray's: One of the best butters we've ever had, this stuff is rich, creamy, and salty — meaning, it's perfection in spreadable form. Give one basket away and keep the other for yourself.
  3. Jose Gourmet: Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil, $9 at Wixter Market: Nothing fishy here! These Portuguese sardines are sustainably caught in the wild.
  4. Featured PB&J Gift Pack, $23 at Big Spoon Roasters: For the kid at heart with a slightly more sophisticated palate, this gift set features a made-to-order nut butter and a specialty jelly.
  5. Rosemary Honey, from $6.50 for three ounces at Savannah Bee Company: Instead of tea, tell your friend to pair this with chicken, shrimp, pork, or lamb for a sweet, woodsy flavor.
  6. No. Six Depot Matcha Salt, $17 for 8 ounces at Hammertown: If your friend is super into matcha, get her this, which combines the tea powder with salt and is great on steamed fish, eggs, edamame, and more.
  7. Smoked Chocolate Chips, $15 for 7 ounces at Brika: Bakers and grillmasters alike will appreciate these semi-sweet chocolate chips, which are enhanced using a 10-hour-long cold-smoking method done over alder wood.
  8. Hot Sauces, $20 for three bottles at Bartaco Marketplace: Whether or not the people in your white elephant swap have been to a Bartaco (though everyone should go!) these spicy sauces — habanero, jalapeño, and roja — will be a hot item.
  9. Umbria Collimartani Extra Virgin Olive Oil, $34 for 16.9 ounces at Eataly: A bottle of good olive oil goes a long way. This stuff is so nice that it's not to be used as everyday olive oil (no roasting veggies in this stuff!), but rather as a finishing oil.
  10. Holiday Juice Box, $60 at Bow Hill Blueberries: More than just juice, this box comes with two 16-ounce bottles of organic heirloom cold-pressed blueberry juice, a 2-ounce package of organic heirloom blueberry powder (for rimming a glass or adding to smoothies), and a custom shot glass.
  11. Fourth & Heart Chocti, $13 for 12 ounces: Get this fancy spread for anyone who loves Nutella. But what exactly is it? It's ghee (a type of clarified butter) with cacao, dates, and a pinch of coconut sugar.
