For this year's Friendsgiving, skip the formal decorations and have a little fun. This decked-out buffet brings a little something special to the table that you might not be able to get away with for a family-centric Turkey Day.

Here's what you'll need to create this look on your own. Don't worry — it only looks complicated!

1. Start layering.

This whole look is all about layers. If you think of the banner in those terms, it makes the process so much easier. Start by taping sheets of tissue paper to the wall to create your background.

2. Add crepe paper.

Using tape, hang alternating colors of fringed garland. Vary the lengths a bit so they don't look uniform. This adds some whimsy to your design and it eliminates the need to be super exact. (Don't worry if they're not all lined up perfectly!)

3. Hang some paper fans.

Paper fans come with a built-in string, which can be taped or thumbtacked to your wall. Again, vary the placement — putting a big one over here and a small one over there. There's no wrong answer. We actually had some extend past the tissue paper background ... just because we could!

4. String up letter balloons.

Blow up some balloon letters and string them up to hang over the top of the garlands and paper fans. If you don't want to buy all the letters for "Friendsgiving," try something like "Feast" or "Friends" or "Eat Up."

5. Set the table.

Center a buffet table or sideboard in front of your banner and use this surface for appetizers, desserts, or drinks. Guests can help themselves — and take all the pictures they want.
