Starbucks U.K. Just Released a New Latte and We're Very Jealous — Food News

August 30, 2017

A trending latte is now going mainstream across the pond. Starbucks is selling the popular turmeric latte, also called "golden milk," in 200 stores across Britain starting August 28. As the name of the beverage suggests, it's going to have an added ingredient that will offer an extra kick of flavor: turmeric.

Starbucks describes the drink as a "warming latte made by steaming milk with aromatic turmeric powder and spices poured over an espresso." Should this drink fare well with consumers, the Seattle-based coffee franchise will roll it out nationwide. But no word if it'll ever arrive in the States.

"The delicious golden-colored milk is one of the latest trends on the high street and makes beautiful Instagram-able latte art," writes Starbucks in a news release. "There are thousands of ways to personalize your latte at Starbucks by choosing dairy alternatives such as almond or coconut, which both complement the warm flavors of turmeric."

Turmeric, a South Asian spice typically used in preparing savory curries, has recently made headlines for its superfood status courtesy of its supposed health benefits. These perks range from fighting super bugs and reducing cholesterol to protecting the liver and boosting the immune system. Some studies have even found the spice to reduce the symptoms of arthritis, have anti-aging benefits, and lower the risk of cancer. It's even been linked to weight loss.

As for the "cult" status of turmeric lattes, the drink soared in popularity early last year. The Guardian reports that the search for the spice on Google went up by 56 percent from November 2015 to January 2016.

It should be noted that Starbucks version of the turmeric latte will include espresso, while other variations of the drink are caffeine-free, featuring a nut milk blended with the spice.
