If you ask us, wallpaper is a bit of a misnomer because it can go on so many things aside from just a regular ol' wall — especially in the kitchen! (Of course, there's nothing wrong with putting it on a wall. This Palm Beach-inspired kitchen is proof of that!)

Here are five surprising places you should think about putting wallpaper in your kitchen. Check them out and then consider planning your own wallpaper project for Labor Day weekend.

1. Behind your shelves.

Anchor a display of pretty dishes by covering the back of your open shelving with a gorgeous wallpaper. We love that Kimberly Duran, the blogger behind Swoon Worthy, used paper that almost perfectly matches her polka-dotted, metallic dinnerware.

2. On your island or peninsula.

People tend to overlook the half wall of an island or a peninsula, but it's a great spot to add an accent without having to worry about going overboard. Paint the section, add tile, or hang wallpaper. Emma Chapman from A Beautiful Mess went for wallpaper, and she even added it in a few other spots throughout the room.

3. In your silverware drawer.

Upgrade your basic drawer liner with a piece of removable vinyl wallpaper. It'll make your kitchen's most notoriously chaotic drawer feel a bit more pulled together. Bonus: It's easy to wipe clean, should crumbs find their way in there.

4. Over ugly appliances.

Camouflage an old or unsightly appliance with a quick wallpaper application, like homeowner Lauren Crouch did in her southern Georgia farmhouse, featured on Country Living. If you're renting, you'll want to choose a removable style (Chasing Paper has great options), but if you're a homeowner not willing to upgrade an appliance just yet, you can go Lauren's route and choose a traditional wallpaper style, then seal it with polyurethane for water-resistance.

5. On old cabinet doors

Don't want to rip out and replace all your cabinets? Try covering the faces with wallpaper. This kitchen, featured on Liga Studios, had flat doors, which worked well. If yours are Shaker-style or have beveled molding, just cover the inside panel on each door and let the decorative elements act as frames.
