Is It Cheaper to Shop at Walmart or Amazon? You Might Be Surprised When You Hear the Answer — Shopping

This is a tough one, right? Perhaps you read this story (See: Is It Cheaper to Shop at Amazon or Costco? The Answer Might Surprise You.) and your whole world was turned upside down? But Walmart is known way more than Amazon for its low, low everyday prices, right? Then again, this is Amazon we're talking about. So, which is cheaper?

The experts at LendEDU, a financial site dedicated to helping students and graduates make educated decisions and better manage their money, compiled a list of 50 products and did a cross-comparison analysis to assess which retailer saves you more money. Here's what they found.

When it comes to food and beverages, Amazon was cheaper!

That list of 50 products was split into five different categories: Home Goods, Kitchen/Home Appliances, Technology and Entertainment, Food & Beverages, and Miscellaneous Items.

In total, Amazon was 10.4 percent more expensive to shop at for the products listed. But look at just the Food & Beverages category and Amazon was cheaper by a whopping 22.51 percent.

For example, a 32-ounce bottle of Heinz ketchup was $3.02 on Amazon and $3.38 at Walmart. A 16-ounce jar of Jif Creamy Peanut Butter was $2.79 on Amazon and $3.30 at Walmart. And a 24-pack of Poland Spring water was $10.38 at Walmart and just $5.99 on Amazon. Add in the convenience of having these things shipped right to you and it's kind of a no-brainer, even when you factor in the price of a Prime membership.

It's worth noting that Amazon didn't compare to Walmart's prices on home goods (think: paper towels, trash bags, aluminum foil, and more) or small appliances (if you need a new toaster oven, you might want to check out Walmart before you go online to Amazon). But if you're a loyal Walmart shopper for groceries, it's worth checking out Amazon to compare the products you frequently buy.
