You Can Now Pre-Order Anthony Bourdain’s Spooky New Comic Book — Pop Culture

January 25, 2018

Anthony Bourdain has a new book on the way, and if you like food that also happens to scare the pants off you, then this one is for you. Because Bourdain's new venture is a spooky comic book series called Hungry Ghosts.

Hungry Ghosts is being published by Dark Horse Comics, and it's a four-part series of graphic novels involving ghost stories and food.

The concept behind Hungry Ghosts is based on an old Japanese parlor game where participants would take turns telling stories about ghosts and other spooky paranormal encounters. (It's a little bit like the old Nickelodeon show, Are You Afraid of the Dark, if the storytellers all stuck around and continued taking turns telling spooky stories all night.)

The first volume includes two stories written by Bourdain and his previous comic book collaborator, Joel Rose, and drawn by artists Alberto Ponticelli and Vanessa Del Rey. In the first tale, a ramen chef refuses to help a beggar, and the consequences are disastrous. In the second, a band of pirates has a ghastly encounter with a drowning woman, and things go very bad for them.

In later stories, the Twilight Zone of food stories involves chefs in Italy, Spain, France, and more. In one, an abusive master chef in a fine French kitchen gets what's coming to him. In another, a chef goes back to his small hometown after working in the city, and finds insatiable mouths to feed.

The series promises to be deeply creepy, and the final volume comes with a "mature" warning. The first volume will be released on January 31, but it's available now for pre-order for $3.99. The following three volumes will be released on February 28, March 28, and April 25.
