This Colorful Kitchen Secret Will Raise Your Home's Value — Paint Project

September 25, 2017

If you're looking for a hue that will pay off big time in your home, it's time to think blue. Or gray. According to a recent Zillow report, homes with light blue or soft gray kitchens sell for an average of $1,809 more than expected.

The stat was published in Zillow's recent 2017 Paint Color Analysis, which combed through 32,000 photos from sold homes around the country to see how certain paint colors impacted the home's sale price, when compared to similar homes with white walls.

It's ironic that something as changeable as a paint color can have such an impact on buyers, but it does. According to Zillow's pros, blue reigns supreme in the kitchen and bathroom, surpassing 2016's preferred shade of yellow (which now sells for $820 less, by the way! Good thing paint can be easily covered up!).

"Color can be a powerful tool for attracting buyers," says Svenja Gudell, Zillow's chief economist. "Painting walls in fresh, natural-looking colors, particularly in shades of blue and pale gray not only make a home feel larger but also are neutral enough to help future buyers envision themselves living in the space."

It makes sense: Light blue always looks great alongside stainless steel appliances and the ever-popular subway tile backsplash. And gray is basically the new neutral. Note: The analysis doesn't say if this paint is best for the walls or cabinetry, but we don't see a wrong answer here.
