If you don’t have any kids around, or if you have a good place to put these where the kids won’t get to them and want to grab a slice to munch on, then these Tequila Soaked Watermelon Wedges are a good recipe for you to make for a 4th of July (or other summery) party.

HOW TO PICK A RIPE WATERMELON

  • Pick it up. A ripe watermelon will feel heavy for its size.
  • Watermelons develop a yellow spot at the place they rested on the ground while growing. When they are ripe and ready to eat, the spot will turn a a brighter yellow. The brighter the spot, the longer the melon stayed on the vine sweetening up.

How to make Tequila Soaked Watermelon Wedges:

These are really easy to make. First, you’ll make a spiked simple syrup by boiling water and sugar in a pan. You’ll let that cool, and then add tequila and triple sec to it. Then you’ll pour that spiked simple syrup over watermelon wedges and let them soak for about an hour. Before serving, you’ll squeeze lime juice over the top and sprinkle with sea salt.

True story… I once tested these out for just my husband and myself. I soaked the watermelon wedges in a spiked simple syrup and then placed them on a platter on our countertop and sprinkled them with lime juice and sea salt. Then I went in the other room to do something. My son (9) came wandering in the house. As I walked into the kitchen, he had a watermelon wedge in his hand and was getting ready to take a bite… when I screamed and said,

“DON’T EAT THAT!”

He had a very puzzled look on his face and asked why. “They have alcohol in them, ” I tried to explain. To which he responded, “How did you spill alcohol on them?”

Kidding aside, they’re really quite delicious, and aren’t overwhelmed with tequila flavor. The best way to describe them is that it’s like you’re eating a watermelon and drinking a margarita at the same time.

Ice cold, dripping with juice, lime wedges and a little dish of sea salt provided, these are perfect for an (adult) summer party. I’d even cut them into smaller wedges to make them appetizer-sized. Or you could use a melon scooper to scoop out round balls of watermelon to soak in the syrup, then place two watermelon balls on a toothpick and serve them that way. Enjoy!

SPIKED SIMPLE SYRUP:

  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup tequila
  • 1/4 cup triple sec

WATERMELON AND GARNISH:

  • 12 medium 1-inch thick watermelon wedges
  • 2 medium limes, cut into wedges
  • flaky sea salt
  • mint leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

PREPARE THE SIMPLE SYRUP:

  • In a small saucepan, bring the sugar and water to a boil. Cook, stirring until the sugar dissolves, about 1 minute. Remove from heat, let cool a bit, and then stir in the tequila and Triple Sec. Set aside to cool completely (refrigerating is faster).

ASSEMBLE THE WEDGES:

  • Arrange the watermelon wedges in a single layer in two (9x13-inch) baking dishes.
  • Pour the cooled simple syrup over the watermelon wedges and refrigerate for at least 45 minutes (longer if you wish).
  • Remove the watermelon wedges from the syrup, and arrange them on a platter. Squeeze limes over the watermelon and sprinkle with sea salt.

Notes

  • *An alternative way to serve these: you can use a melon scooper to scoop out round balls of watermelon to soak in the syrup, then place two watermelon balls on a toothpick and serve them that way (more like an appetizer).
