Turtles are a candy made with pecans and gooey caramel covered in chocolate, with a shape resembling a turtle. They’re basically pecan clusters made with a combination of chocolate and soft caramels.

You may recognize this homemade turtle candy from a gourmet candy shop. Chocolate turtles are always a favorite in those kinds of places. This homemade turtle candy recipe is so easy to make with a short list of simple ingredients, and these delicious treats have become a favorite for displaying on treat platters during the holiday season. They also make great gifts at Christmas time. Everyone loves homemade candy, and turtles are a fabulous holiday treat! Don’t buy any kind of store-bought version of turtles. Try making this homemade turtles recipe instead!

Ingredients needed:

  • whole pecans
  • wrapped caramels
  • heavy whipping cream
  • milk chocolate chips (can use dark chocolate too)
  • flaky sea salt

How to make Turtles Candy:

Put the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second bursts, stirring after each burst until melted and smooth.

There is not need to make homemade caramel for this homemade turtle candies recipe. Wrapped soft caramels work just fine. Place the caramels in a microwave-safe bowl with the cream. Microwave for one minute, then stir, and then microwave another minute- stir until melted and smooth. Let it cool a bit or the melted caramel will melt the chocolate!

Line a large baking sheet with wax paper or parchment paper. Lay out three pecans in a spoke-fashion. Repeat to make 18 pecan spokes.

Spoon the caramel on top of each group of pecans. Spoon the chocolate on top of the caramel.

Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top of the chocolate on each turtle (if desired). Let these cool completely before storing in an airtight container in a single layer. The best way to store them is at room temperature.

These pecan turtles are some delicious little sweet treats! The salty/sweet combination is so good and the chewy caramel and crunchy pecans too. Don’t skip out on the addition of sea salt!
