The Best Classic French Toast is one where the toast is lightly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. And it’s flavored perfectly with cream and spice!

Weekends are perfect for special breakfasts. So why not make French toast? It’s a favorite to order in a restaurant because they tend to make it a lot better than we make it at home. But you can easily make the best classic French toast at home and share it with everyone around you.

How to make the Best Classic French Toast:

The full, printable recipe is at the end of this post.

You will need a loaf of good bread. I suggest using either brioche or challah bread. You should be able to find one of those in the bakery of your local market. Cut the loaf into thick slices. Two slices per person is a good serving size.

Follow the instructions in the recipe for making the dipping batter. Dip the bread into the batter so it covers both sides well. Let the excess drip off.

Melt butter in a skillet. Add the dipped bread to the skillet.

Cook the French toast on each side until lightly golden brown- 3 to 5 minutes per side.

For serving, add a pat of butter (if desired) and warm maple syrup.

Syrup is the traditional way to top the best classic french toast. But I’d like to suggest you add berries too. Blueberries and strawberries are a great topper for French toast, and they happen to taste pretty good with the maple syrup too. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup milk
  • 4 large eggs, beaten
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tablespoons granulated white sugar
  • teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon salt
  • 8 thick-cut slices brioche or challah bread (1 to 1½-inches thick)
  • butter, for the skillet
  • maple syrup, honey, fresh berries, powdered sugar, whipped cream  (for serving, as desired)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt- making sure there are no streaks of egg left.
  • Soak each piece of bread in the egg mixture, making sure to turn it so both sides are well-coated. Let any excess liquid drip off.
  • Preheat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add a pat of butter and swirl it around to coat the pan. Add the soaked French toast (let the excess egg mixture drip off before you put it in the pan), and cook until light golden on both sides, about 3 to 5 minutes per side, flipping once. You can adjust the heat down if necessary. You will likely need to cook the French toast in 2 batches.
  • Serve warm, topped with anything you like.
