We’re ready for spring, aren’t we? We’ve been wildfired, mudslided, bomb cycloned, arctic blasted. Even Los Angeles reached record lows this winter. I won’t lie, I’ve relished the rain, the zero chance for wildfire. It’s a comfort, especially when you live in the middle of nowhere, in a peak fire risk zone, like I do.
But I welcome the return of the light. I feel my skin awakening, shifting from damp and dark to dry and light. I can also feel my skin wanting some help along the way. Yours, too?
I’m here with a perfect, ultra easy face mask that you can make in minutes from ingredients you’ve already got in your pantry.
Here’s how:
- oat flour (ground oats): exfoliates and soothes skin
- honey: balances skin’s pH, antibacterial, anti-aging, moisturizing
- unfiltered apple cider vinegar: exfoliates and tones skin, balances pH
- rosewater (or water): reduces redness, soothes skin
Oat flour, along with honey, helps draw moisture to the skin, soothing irritation and epidermal anxiety (you know the kind).
Honey and apple cider vinegar both work to maintain your skin’s acid mantle: a fine film on the skin’s surface that protects from damage and bacteria. We regularly disturb our acid mantle by using harsh, alkalizing soaps and other chemical ingredients (which is why I use raw honey as a face cleanser). Apple cider vinegar gently exfoliates while maintaining the acid mantle, making it a true skin hero.
Rosewater has lovely aromatherapeutic properties and helps to reduce redness, but plain water will work just fine.
This mask is perfect for combination skin, or skin that’s acting a bit temperamental with the change of seasons. Whip it up in five minutes, take ten to breathe, relax, and let it work its magic on your face, then wash off and moisturize with some lovely oils.
Bountiful spring to you.
